AgriFoodTech funding declines in 2025
</aside>
DigitalFoodLab’s Q4 data compilation shows AgriFoodTech funding declined again in 2025 ($12.6B), returning to near-2023 levels (12.7B) after a 2024 bounce driven by a few megadeals ($15.9B) (see graph below).

In 2025, investment remained largely driven by US startups, whose strong performance amid overall stagnation came largely at the expense of European startups (see graph below).

GFI Europe flags near-term economics gaps for precision fermentation
</aside>
An analysis by The Good Food Institute (GFI) Europe finds that only ~24% of precision-fermented molecules appear economically viable in the near term, with the strongest potential in functional proteins such as whey protein (α-lactalbumin).
A case study suggests that precision-fermented α-lactalbumin (see picture below) could approach cost competitiveness with dairy proteins for infant formula and sports nutrition, especially when considering cost-in-use.
